Actor Tom - who plays bad boy Carl King in Emmerdale - dropped in to the shopping centre to meet fans and perform the big lights switch-on.

The event also raised money for a good cause, after generous Tom donated his appearance fee to Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice in North Anston near Sheffield.

Sarah Champion, Bluebell Wood chief executive, said: "It is fantastic that Crystal Peaks and Tom are supporting us with this event.

"It costs £2.5 million every year to offer the service we provide, both at our hospice site and in the community. Public support is vital to our continued success."

The shopping centre's Christmas Grotto also opened yesterday, giving kids the opportunity to meet Santa Claus until 2pm on Christmas Eve.

Lee Greenwood, from Crystal Peaks, said: "This special appearance from Emmerdale's favourite character is a great fun way to start the Christmas ball rolling."
